About iPhoneAtmo
A wallpaper site from the first iPhone summer, rebuilt in 2026.
2007 and 2026
iPhoneAtmo opened in July 2007, a month after the first iPhone went on sale, as a gallery of 320 × 480 wallpapers sorted by category. It stopped growing at the end of 2008 and stayed online, unchanged, until 2015. The domain then changed hands several times and carried unrelated content.
It was taken over and rebuilt in 2026. The people behind the 2007 gallery are not involved, and none of the original wallpapers is republished: many of them were pictures of celebrities, brands and films that the old site had no right to use. Pages that other sites linked to are back at the same address, with new pictures of the same subjects where the subject allowed it.
How the wallpapers are made
- Generated in code. Gradients, auroras, contour maps, flow fields, smoke, ink and the true-black OLED designs are drawn by small programs written for this site and rendered at 1320 × 2868. Each one records its recipe and random seed, so it can be rebuilt identically.
- Public-domain and openly licensed works. Prints and paintings from the Open Access collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (CC0); photographs made by U.S. federal agencies (public domain); photographs whose authors released them under CC0, from Wikimedia Commons; images from NASA (public domain) and from ESA/Webb (CC BY 4.0, with the credit given on each page).
Every wallpaper's page names its source, author, date and licence, with a link to the original record. No stock-photo library is used: their licences forbid redistributing photos on wallpaper sites. No picture is an official Apple wallpaper, and none shows an Apple product or logo.
Licence
The wallpapers made in code are free for personal use: set them on your phone, your tablet or your computer. Please do not sell them or re-host them as a collection. Public-domain works stay public domain; the ESA/Webb images keep their CC BY 4.0 licence and the credit that goes with it.
Privacy
No cookies, no analytics, no advertising, no account. The "Your screen" line and the Get it button work entirely in your browser; nothing about your device is sent anywhere. The only thing remembered, for the length of the visit, is whether you hid the clock.
