Abstract iPhone wallpapers

Smoke, ink, light trails, contour lines and marbled colour, all computed rather than photographed.

Abstract is the oldest category on the site: it existed in 2007, when the wallpapers measured 320 × 480. The new ones are drawn by small programs. A flow field drops thousands of short strokes into an invisible current. A contour map traces the lines of equal height on terrain that exists only as noise. The ink and marble pieces fold that noise into itself twice, a technique called domain warping, which is where the silky, liquid shapes come from.

Busy patterns fight with app icons, so most of these keep their detail low or toward the edges. If you want something calmer for the home screen, the minimal and gradient categories go further in that direction.
