The aspect ratio question
Since the iPhone X in 2017, almost every iPhone screen has the same shape, about 19.5 by 9, so a 1320 × 2868 wallpaper fits all of them with a simple resize. The older 16:9 phones (6 to 8, and the SE) are wider for their height, and the 2007 to iPhone 4s screens wider again (3:2), so a modern wallpaper loses some of its top and bottom there. The iPhone Duo is the odd one out: both of its screens are close to 1.4:1, much squatter than any other iPhone.
Bigger is fine, smaller is not
iOS scales a wallpaper to fill the screen. A larger image shrinks without loss; a smaller one is stretched and goes soft (more in why your wallpaper looks blurry). If you are unsure of your model, take the 1320 × 2868 file: it is the largest 19.5:9 size Apple makes.
