Waterfalls by Hokusai, rain by Hiroshige, mountains by Bierstadt, and the American West photographed by park rangers and Ansel Adams.

Japanese woodblock prints were made tall long before phones were: the Edo-period series reproduced here are vertical compositions, which is why they crop so well to a lock screen. Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, from 1856 to 1858, supplies the rain, the plum blossom and the maples; Hokusai's waterfall series supplies the falling water.

The photographs come from the U.S. National Park Service and from Ansel Adams's 1942 commission for the Department of the Interior, both public domain. Monument Valley, the mountain at the blue hour and the Paris boulevard at night keep the addresses they had on the 2007 site.
