Why your iPhone wallpaper looks blurry or dimmed, and the fix

Five causes, in the order worth checking.

1. The file is smaller than your screen

The most common cause. A picture saved from a chat app, a social network or a search result is often 1080 pixels wide or less, and an iPhone 17 Pro screen is 1206 pixels wide. iOS stretches it to fill the screen and it goes soft. The fix is a file at least as large as your screen's resolution: see every iPhone's size. Every wallpaper on this site comes at 1320 × 2868, or cropped to your exact model.

2. The home screen is set to blur

Since iOS 16 the home screen can use a blurred copy of the lock screen wallpaper so icons stand out. Press and hold the lock screen, tap Customize, choose the home screen, and switch the blur off. If the home screen shows a plain colour or a gradient instead of your picture, the same screen lets you pick Original.

3. Dark mode dims it

iOS can darken the wallpaper when the phone is in dark mode. In Settings → Wallpaper, look for the dark-appearance dimming option and turn it off if you want the picture at full brightness at night. On the always-on display of Pro models the wallpaper is also dimmed on purpose, to save power; that is not a fault.

4. It is zoomed in

When a picture's shape does not match the screen, iOS zooms to fill it, which also magnifies the pixels. Pinch out while editing the lock screen, or use a file made at your screen's exact resolution, which needs no zoom.

5. The image was compressed twice

Messaging apps recompress pictures to save data. Banding in skies and gradients, and blocky edges, are the sign. Send the original as a file, or download it again from its source.
